Stiff Free Pdf

ISBN: B0001O356G
Title: Stiff Pdf The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers
An oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem.

For two thousand years, cadavers (some willingly, some unwittingly) have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way.

In this fascinating, ennobling account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries from the anatomy labs and human-sourced pharmacies of medieval and nineteenth-century Europe to a human decay research facility in Tennessee, to a plastic surgery practice lab, to a Scandinavian funeral directors' conference on human composting. In her droll, inimitable voice, Roach tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them.

First of all the good, I like the history and all the research ... First of all the good, I like the history and all the research she did. I love hearing about the history of death and mourning, the history of medical research and organ donation. I don't mind the "gross" stuff about human bodies or the "irreverence", that's the point of this book to explore these topics that we shy away from as a society. In fact I find it slightly annoying that she constantly emphasizes how weird people probably think she is for asking certain questions or how much she seems to coddle the reader about some of the more explicit parts of death and cadavers. What I really find disturbing is the many times she talks about the horrible, painful, and mostly useless studies that we've done on LIVING animals. She talks about dead bodies with respect, but the casual horrific details about puppies having their heads sown onto other living dogs only to suffer and die over a matter of days... I just didn't expect that and it was fairly depressing. The experimentation on living animals seemed to be kind of a joke to her and it started to make me sick to my stomach and sort of ruined an otherwise fascinating book.Morbid yet entertaining Stiff: The Curious Life of Human Cadavers is an example of a morbid topic turned into a page turning and ironically uplifting read. Stiff is very informative on the history and uses of cadavers while also providing entertainment through Roach’s unique style of writing. Additionally, the book contains numerous gory stories about blood and death, but the real meat of the book is in Roach’s main point of the history and uses of cadavers. She uses real examples of scientists and researchers performing horrific operations on human remains in order to learn the anatomy of our complex species. The chapters are deliberate and in depth and they address a wide range of topics from impact studies for car safety to human composting as a new means of disposal. Roach is additionally accommodating enough to include informative footnotes in places where the subject deviates from common knowledge. One of the best things about this book, besides just the mere content, is the witty style in which Roach employs. She seamlessly integrates jokes and humor into her writing of dead people without being the least bit disrespectful, in my opinion. To make its case, Stiff appeals to both medical interests in the surgeries described and to historical ones in its ample amount of sources on how humans first discovered how our anatomy was designed. The prominence of death in the book however does not lower its accomplishments by any means. If anything, death and dying opens up a new conversation of what to do after we die. The only piece of cautionary advice I have is that certain parts are a bit too bloody and gory, which may lead to sensitive readers not being able to read every page. To oversimplify, Stiff is one of a kind and can be thoroughly enjoyed no matter what medical expertise one has. While prior knowing of the book’s anatomy knowledge is useful in understanding the kind of value it has, it can be advantageous for a multitude of audiences.

The Five Love Languages Download

ISBN: B079B7PJMV
Title: The Five Love Languages Pdf The Secret to Love That Lasts

Dr. Gary Chapman identifies five basic languages of love and then guides couples towards a better understanding of their unique languages of love. Learn to speak and understand your mate's love language, and in no time you will be able to effectively love and truly feel loved in return. Skillful communication is within your grasp!

Definitely worth reading to improve your relationship with your spouse. It is definitely a good book for couples and it has improved my relationship with my wife. If nothing else it shows you what things your partner is really looking for out of their spouse. I quickly found that my love language was "Acts of Service". Though it might not be sexy or macho to say that, it means more to me to have the dishes and laundry done when I come home after work or have minor home improvements taken care of before I get home. My wife and I have 2 small children and our house is hard to stay clean because every room feels like a mess. We do clean it all the time but it feels like a losing battle. My wife's love language is "Words of Affirmation". As you can tell from all these Amazon reviews I am much more of a writer than I am a talker. My wife is always looking for me to say how much I love and appreciate her because I don't say it often enough.A big part of improving your relationship with your spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend is to sticking with a date night to make sure you have quality time together. Especially if you have children or a high stress occupation. My wife and I have been together for 10 years and got stuck in the rut of an endless routine of doing everything we could for our kids, followed by daily chores and left little time for ourselves. Committing to 1 date night a week has really helped our relationship and improved our communication.I recommend the book for sure and found it inspiring and worth reading. All couples can benefit from reading this book. The only downside is I wish it could have been a little longer. The stories from the author are interesting and I would have liked to have heard a bunch of his other examples of couples that he has dealt with. It was a short book and my wife and I finished it in 4 or 5 days and that was reading it slowly. The price is easily affordable. I found it best to photo copy the test quiz at the end instead of writing in the book so we can give the book to any family or friends who are struggling with their relationship.Religious undertones The book was pretty good, it had some valid points and learning that there are different ways that people express their love was important. What I think pulled away from the book was the underlying religious agenda to preach about God. It totally turned me off And I thought it was completely unnecessary to deliver the message. Of course if you are a religious person then this would be right up your alley.Sexist, heteronormative, triggering and Religious I stopped reading at the part where the author recommended a woman to sleep with her husband against her will. WTF? Highly triggering for sexual abuse and domestic violence survivors. Also, the book reads like it’s written for white Christians. And for men who don’t want a partnership, but rather want to coerce their wife into being their sexually subservient housemaid/servant because they just don’t like vacuuming and can‘t afford hiring a cleaner („I thought I get myself a wife for that“).So if you’re a white Christian man or woman who likes to be a little housewife, yes, this book‘s for you.Besides that, the book offers solid scientific facts such as man‘s sex drive being dominated biologically by sperm pressure; that women‘s sex drive is purely emotional and not driven by their bodies; and more.

Author: Jamie Ford
Published Date: 2009

“An impressive, bitter, and sweet debut that explores the age-old conflicts between father and son, the beauty and sadness of what happened to Japanese Americans in the Seattle era during World War II, and the depths and longing of deep-heart love.”—Lisa See“A tender and satisfying novel set in a time and a place lost forever, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet gives us a glimpse of the damage that is caused by war—not the sweeping damage of the battlefield but the cold, cruel damage to the hearts and humanity of individual people. This is a beautifully written book that will make you think. And, more important, it will make you feel.”—Garth Stein, bestselling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain“Mesmerizing and evocative, a tale of conflicted loyalties and timeless devotion.”—Sara Gruen, bestselling author of Water for Elephants“A wartime-era Chinese-Japanese variation on Romeo and Juliet . . . The period detail [is] so revealing and so well rendered.”—The Seattle Times“A poignant story that transports the reader back in time . . . a satisfying and heart-wrenching tale.”—Deseret Morning News“A lovely combination of romantic coincidence, historic detail and realism that is smooth and highly readable . . . Ford does wonderful work in re-creating prewar Seattle.”—The Oregonian“Heartfelt . . . a timely debut that not only reminds readers of a shameful episode in American history, but cautions us to examine the present and take heed we don’t repeat those injustices.”—Kirkus Reviews“Ford’s story of an innocent passion across racial barriers—and of the life of a man who forsook the girl he loved—is told with an artistic technique that makes emotion inevitable.”—Louis B. Jones“A beautiful and tender masterpiece . . . a book everyone will be talking about, and the best book you’ll read this year.”—Anne Frasier“A heartwarming story of fathers and sons, first loves, fate, and the resilient human heart . . . marvelously evocative.”—Jim Tomlinson Jamie Ford is the great-grandson of Nevada mining pioneer Min Chung, who emigrated from Kaiping, China, to San Francisco in 1865, where he adopted the Western name “Ford,” thus confusing countless generations. Ford is an award-winning short-story writer, an alumnus of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers, and a survivor of Orson Scott Card’s Literary Boot Camp. Having grown up near Seattle’s Chinatown, he now lives in Montana with his wife and children.

In the opening pages of Jamie Ford’s stunning debut novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle’s Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

This simple act takes old Henry Lee back to the 1940s, at the height of the war, when young Henry’s world is a jumble of confusion and excitement, and to his father, who is obsessed with the war in China and having Henry grow up American. While “scholarshipping” at the exclusive Rainier Elementary, where the white kids ignore him, Henry meets Keiko Okabe, a young Japanese American student. Amid the chaos of blackouts, curfews, and FBI raids, Henry and Keiko forge a bond of friendship–and innocent love–that transcends the long-standing prejudices of their Old World ancestors. And after Keiko and her family are swept up in the evacuations to the internment camps, she and Henry are left only with the hope that the war will end, and that their promise to each other will be kept.

Forty years later, Henry Lee is certain that the parasol belonged to Keiko. In the hotel’s dark dusty basement he begins looking for signs of the Okabe family’s belongings and for a long-lost object whose value he cannot begin to measure. Now a widower, Henry is still trying to find his voice–words that might explain the actions of his nationalistic father; words that might bridge the gap between him and his modern, Chinese American son; words that might help him confront the choices he made many years ago.

Set during one of the most conflicted and volatile times in American history, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is an extraordinary story of commitment and enduring hope. In Henry and Keiko, Jamie Ford has created an unforgettable duo whose story teaches us of the power of forgiveness and the human heart.

"Sentimental, heartfelt….the exploration of Henry’s changing relationship with his family and with Keiko will keep most readers turning pages...A timely debut that not only reminds readers of a shameful episode in American history, but cautions us to examine the present and take heed we don’t repeat those injustices."-- Kirkus Reviews

“A tender and satisfying novel set in a time and a place lost forever, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet gives us a glimpse of the damage that is caused by war--not the sweeping damage of the battlefield, but the cold, cruel damage to the hearts and humanity of individual people. Especially relevant in today's world, this is a beautifully written book that will make you think. And, more importantly, it will make you feel."
-- Garth Stein, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain

“Jamie Ford's first novel explores the age-old conflicts between father and son, the beauty and sadness of what happened to Japanese Americans in the Seattle area during World War II, and the depths and longing of deep-heart love. An impressive, bitter, and sweet debut.”
-- Lisa See, bestselling author of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

Bitter, Sweet and Poignant Memories of the Japanese Internment During WWII Henry, a 2nd generation Chinese-American, is just 12 years old and living in Seattle at the time during WWII when Japanese citizens were rounded up and sent off to internment camps. Henry has befriended Keiko, a young Japanese girl at the private school they both attend, since they are the only non-whites at the school. At the urging of his very traditional father, Henry wears a "I Am Chinese" button every day on his shirt so that he won't be confused with a Japanese person and suffer the discrimination and taunting that Japanese people were subjected to daily.Henry's parents do not know at first that his best friend is Japanese, but when they finally learn of this, they turn their backs on him though they don't kick him out of the house. Thus begins a long, lonely period when Henry merely exists and lives in a silent household. When Keiko's family is sent off to the camps, Henry is shocked and saddened, but vows to never forget her. He somehow scrapes together enough money to get on a bus and ride all the way to Idaho to see her. They vow to write to each other, but the letters over the 2+ years that she is in the camp are sporadic and his final letter is returned, marked addressee unknown.Years later in 1986, Henry becomes aware of the possessions from some of the Japanese families, stored in a nearby old boarded up hotel. This opens up the memories from the 1940's and begins a search for the truth of what happened in the 1940's. There are many bitter, sweet and poignant memories and scenes in this story. The novel struck a chord with me because I have visited Manzanar and have known people who had been held in the camps. It's important to remember and read about these stories. Too many people aren't even aware of the tragedy of the incarceration of so many innocent citizens during the war.First Love and Growing Up during War I learned about this book from an article over the Panama Hotel in Seattle (National Parks Magazine). Mr. Ford lyrically weaves together three elements: A Bildungsroman of Henry, the main character; a retelling of Romeo and Juliet between Chinese and Japanese families; and an unsparing exposition of the paranoia and racism that led to the internment of Japanese-American families during WWII. This is storytelling at its best.Highly recommended I loved every page of this book. I couldn't go to sleep all night until I finished it! The main character, Henry, is 56 years old as his story unravels, and his wife has just passed. Jamie Ford leads the reader carefully through each incident/story, always creating curiosity.. The book is based on real places and facts in history which I loved, having learned yet a new perspectives of WWII. I've never considered what it would be like for the Japanese who were living in America after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and I never understood the reason for the interment camps. Having friends from each culture, I have observed the confusion in America about the two totally different cultures. This read promises to entertain and enlighten. After reading, I was still curious about the jazz and searched the internet to learn about Oscar Holden. I'm sorry to be finished with this story and hope Jamie Ford doesn't disappoint in the next book!

Hagakure Pdf

ISBN: 4805311983
Title: Hagakure Pdf The Secret Wisdom of the Samurai
Author: Yamamoto Tsunetomo
Published Date: 2014-05-27
Page: 288

"[A] strong point is a scholarly and succinct introduction that grounds the work in historical and social context, equipping the reader with a cultural map of Yamamoto's world. Footnotes provide valuable background and add resonance throughout, keeping names and familial relations straight, highlighting pertinent cross-references and generally rendering the work accessible to contemporary readers." —The Japan Times"Alex Bennett has produced the first truly authoritative translation and analysis of Hagakure—perhaps the most famous text ever written about samurai honor—to appear in any Western language. Simultaneously erudite and accessible, this volume belongs on the bookshelves of anyone—scholar or hobbyist alike—interested in samurai culture, or modern perceptions thereof." —Dr. Karl F. Friday, author of Samurai, Warfare and the State in Early Medieval Japan and Japan Emerging: Premodern History to 1850"[Alex Bennett] is the very best writer on martial arts alive today and [his] work needs to be showcased to the general public." —Don Warrener, President, Budo International"…the most impressive part of the book for us was Bennett's introductory chapter…It puts the Hagakure into its proper historical and social setting as well as examining 'bushido' […] with a critical eye and a look at how Jocho's life experiences and psychology is reflected in the work—and does so elegantly and brilliantly. This translation is well worth picking up just on the strength of this chapter." —TheShogunsHouse.com blog"Dr. Bennett possesses a profound knowledge of, and deep insight into, the world of Japanese bushido. This expertise has been enhanced by his extensive practical experience of the traditional martial arts of Japan, and his proficiency in this domain is highly acclaimed." —Tetsuo Yamaori, former Director of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies Alexander Bennett holds doctorates from the University of Canterbury and Kyoto University. He has worked for the International Research Center for Japanese Studies and is currently Associate Professor at Kansai University's Department of International Affairs. He frequently lectures on Japanese martial culture and is Vice President of the International Naginata Federation and a committee member of the All Japan Kendo Federation, as well as director of the Japanese Academy of Budo. He is also the head coach of New Zealand Kendo. His recent publications include Naginata: the Definitive Guide, Budo Perspectives, The History and Spirit of Budo and The Bushido That Japanese Don't Know (in Japanese).

The comprehensive and accurate edition of the Hagakure is a must-have for serious martial artists or fans of samurai and the bushido code.

The Hagakure is one of the most influential of all Japanese texts—written nearly 300 years ago by Yamamoto Tsunetomo to summarize the very essence of the Japanese Samurai bushido ("warrior") spirit. Its influence has been felt throughout the world, and yet its existence is scarcely known to many Westerners. This is the first translation to include the complete first two books of the Hagakure and the most reliable and authentic passages contained within the third book; all other English translations published previously have been fragmentary and incomplete.

Alex Bennett's wholly new and highly readable translation of this essential work includes extensive footnotes that serve to fill in many cultural and historical gaps in the previous translations. This unique combination of readability and scholarship gives Hagakure: The Secret Wisdom of the Samurai a distinct advantage over all previous English editions.

The best translation of this work available. Dr. Bennett brings to this work a unique set of qualifications. There are quite a few translations by people who are fluent in Japanese but not so aware of kendo and the history of Japanese martial arts. There are also quite a few translations by people who are highly knowledgeable of kendo and the history of Japanese martial arts. Dr. Bennett, is not only a scholar of the history of Japanese martial arts but comes with a very deep knowledge of the Japanese language based on long years of living in Japan.I'm glad to be one of the first people to own this book and, after my first run through I'm looking forward to a deeper reading of the book.Best translation of Hagakure I've read so far Dr. Alex Bennett's translation of Hagakure is the first version I've come across which manages to both capture the historical context of Yamamoto Tsunetomo's writings and view it through modern perspective. The world described by Tsunetomo can often seem very alien and the underlying meaning of many passages is not obvious to the modern reader. Dr. Bennetts extensive knowledge of Japanese culture and Budo history provides the necessary historical and cultural context required to understand the mindset of a 18th century samurai. This version have made several passages which previously were incomprehensible to me as clear as day and made me re-evaluate my opinions of Hagakure. A must read for anyone who has an interest in the samurai culture and the Tokugawa-era.Deep little book, great for phone reading This seems like THE version to get. Lots of footnotes, great introduction and other little extras made it a nice buy. It's also a convenient book for your phone too, as each vignette is no more than a paragraph or two -- two pages at most. Therefore, it's a nice book to quickly read bits and pieces and put away for a little contemplation, instead of staring at the screen for far too long like a typical chapter of an ebook. (Which gets old.)In terms of the book itself, it was different than I expected. I'd known about the book for sometime, yet never pored through it. As a longtime martial artist, I felt some kind of calling to read it, as I'm sure many others have as well. Plus, I've always had a fascination with samurai and feudal Japan. But enough about me.I found the book simple yet deep. It's full of many accounts and stories which teach how a samurai should act (and sometimes should NOT act) as well slightly cryptic tales, of which one decides their own interpretation of. It can be a little repetitious, but perhaps that's one hidden tool behind it.At times, I couldn't help but feel that I was reading the book somewhat out of context. Although, footnotes are provided, I can't say for certain whether the book can be taken in the utmost literal sense. However, there is surely wisdom to gain from each book, which can certainly benefit a modern-day individual. It's up to you to decide what to take away from it, I suppose. Not a bad book, but you'll have to put in a little work with this one in order to get results. If anything, your understanding of samurai way of life will be enhanced. I think, anyway ...

She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, two children, and three dogs.

Cravings: Hungry for More takes us further into Chrissy’s kitchen . . . and life. It’s a life of pancakes that remind you of blueberry pie, eating onion dip with your glam squad, banana bread that breaks the internet, and a little something called Pad Thai Carbonara. After two years of parenthood, falling in love with different flavors, and relearning the healing power of comfort food, this book is like Chrissy’s new edible diary: recipes for quick-as-a-snap meals; recipes for lighter, brighter, healthier-ish living; and recipes that, well, are gonna put you to bed, holding your belly. And it will have you hungry for more.

Chrissy I love it!! She is my favorite keep it real celebrity out there! Her book is amazing! She looks great and is so amazing doing this postpartum ❤ My babies will love their fluffy corndogs now! And like my 2 year old says "Snacks, on Snacks, on Snacks!!"Beautiful book, a good sophomore effort. This is a gorgeous recipe book, and it is great to look through. The personal stories are touching and the photographs are amazing. I think it’s tough to follow Cravings, which was such a surprise hit. These recipes are fine, but there was just something more appealing about the recipes in the first book. They felt more authentic. This book feels a bit forced, and a lot less like these are recipes you could see Chrissy making in her kitchen and more like the recipes people expect her to make in her kitchen because she has grown and matured since Cravings was released.Overall it is a good selection of recipes. But I wouldn’t consider it a must have for every cook’s collection of recipe books.Good purchase, not as great as book 1 I loooooove Chrissy's cooking. She is incredibly talented at creating foods that are out of this world. Her first book is a kitchen must have. This second book is also very good, but it has some recipes thrown in there that seem odd and unnecessary (nachos and hobo dinner??). Such a creative writer and chef, I just personally dont care for simple recipes that make it into cookbooks, they seem like page fillers.
