Bright Kids Who Can’t Keep Up

Bright Kids Who Can’t Keep Up: Help Your Child Overcome Slow Processing Speed and Succeed in a Fast-Paced World Paperback – July 18, 2014
Author: Ellen Braaten PhD ID: 1609184726

Review

“Superb, immensely helpful, authoritative; written with clarity, insight, and pizzazz. Highly recommended.”–Edward Hallowell, MD, coauthor of Driven to Distraction

“Finally, a book that tackles processing speed head on! After my son was diagnosed with slow processing speed, I began searching for answers. This is the first book that focuses on all the aspects of slow processing speed: home life, school life, and the emotional toll. Just like my son, the children described in this book all want to work hard and do well, but something is blocking them from thriving. The authors guide you to make a consistent, targeted plan to help your child live up to his or her potential. As a teacher, this book is also helping me understand and address learning issues that I often see in the classroom.”–Sarah R., parent

“If you picture child development as a marathon, life for kids with processing speed issues is more like a steeplechase, with barriers and obstacles that have enormous implications for learning and social and emotional development. This book offers parents an extraordinary gift of knowledge and wisdom to aid in recognizing, understanding, and addressing the challenges of slow processing speed. Drs. Braaten and Willoughby help you accommodate your child’s needs and promote essential skills so he or she can thrive.”–Jerrold F. Rosenbaum, MD, Chief of Psychiatry, Massachusetts General Hospital; Stanley Cobb Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

“Drs. Braaten and Willoughby do an exceptional job of deconstructing the complex construct of processing speed. Through examples, articulate explanations of testing results, and clear descriptions of brain processes, this book provides a road map for parents.”–Timothy E. Wilens, MD, author of Straight Talk about Psychiatric Medications for Kids

“Parents in our neurodevelopmental clinic often ask, ‘If my kid is so smart, why is he so slow?’ Finally, there is a book to help parents understand processing speed and its impact on learning and behavior. Drs. Braaten and Willoughby explain the unique way your child engages with the world and discuss ways to overcome challenges, rather than simply offering labels. I will keep a copy of this book on my desk and add it to the short list of parenting books I unconditionally recommend.”–Sam Goldstein, PhD, Neurology, Learning, and Behavior Center, Salt Lake City, Utah

“This is an easy-to-read, informative book….The tone of the book is collaborative….I wish someone had handed me a copy of this book during my first year of teaching….This would be a great resource for any teacher, either to better understand these children or to share knowledge with parents….The book has several user-friendly features, including checklists, sample case studies, clear and simple explanations about working with these kids, and a list of additional resources in the back. Psychologists who evaluate and work with children with learning disabilities might also use the book when interacting with parents. Overall, Braaten and Willoughby take away the scientific, scary-sounding name of this learning disability and replace it with real examples of how these kids experiences the world. They help readers appreciate that these kids are indeed brightand that with some adjustments to their daily routine, they can achieve daily success, too.”

(PsychCentral 2015-04-06)

“Child psychologists Braaten and Willoughby here offer a first-of-a-kind book on processing speeds in this aptly named title for parents, presenting a new area of cognitive research that is sure to receive more attention in the future….The authors provide checklists and psychological testing profiles to help parents identify specific areas of weaknesses. An encouraging look at a problem to which many parents will relate….The authors do an excellent job of bringing the psychological research into the home. (* starred review)”

This is a great book if you have a child with slow processing speed. The descriptions of child and family are spot on. I wish there were a little more discussion of how to get an IEP and what to put in it, but what’s there is very good.

Invaluable for parents that don’t understand why their child’s "slowness" impedes their academic achievement. I’ve bought several copies to hand out to my patients.

Being that this is a book about kids with slow-processing speed (right here!), how on God’s green earth is there not an audiobook for this? As I’ve heard the author herself mention audiobooks and text-to-speech tools numerous times as one of the "treatments" for individuals who suffer from such problems.

I would’ve grabbed the Kindle version and loaded it up in Voice Dream (an app that’s quadrupled the amount I read), but thanks to ‘s DRM stuff, that’s easier said than done.

I want to read this book so bad! But I need to have it in a format that people like me (the high verbal ability, slow-processing speed people the book touches on) can digest and enjoy.

Audible, get with it and do what you were made to do! Or Ellen, better yet, open up GarageBand, flip to page one, hit record, and start reading. Purty please! Do it for we, the processing disabled! =)

*Four stars in my head, five stars in real life with an audiobook.

It was a true privilege to open my mail and discover an extraordinary review copy of America’s National Parks: A Pop-Up Book .Before I get into the wonders of the book, I must mention that one of the book’s main purposes is to raise money for our National Park system. For every copy of the book sold, $8 will be donated to the National Park Conservation Association (NPCA); the publisher’s goal is to raise $100,000 for this cause, but only 1,200 copies of the Deluxe Limited Edition will be produced. Each of these are numbered and autographed by the paper engineer, illustrator and author. If you wish to purchase a Limited Edition book, you can only do so on the publisher’s website.

America’s National Parks features six National Parks: 1) Everglades; 2) Great Smoky Mountains; 3) Grand Canyon; 4) Yellowstone; 5) Glacier and 6) Yosemite. The book begins with a most informative introduction to our National Parks. Did you know there are 58 National Parks and close to 400 preserved places the National Park System is responsible for protecting? Next to the intro you will find a letter from the President of the National Park Conservation Association. But the real thrill begins when you open up the first two-page pop-up spread. Here you’ll be greeted by Everglades National Park, ironically, the National Park closest to my home and my heart. The detail of the pop-up River of Grass is phenomenal, from the tree hammock to the canoe and die cut birds. There’s even a small side card that, when opened, up pops a gator and what appears to me to be a Great Blue Heron.

Along with each pop-up spread are fascinating facts about each park. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park spread features spring flower pop-ups and some cool information about the American Black Bear.

The Complete Guide to FastPass+ and My Disney Experience

The Complete Guide to FastPass+ and My Disney Experience: Tips & strategies for a magical Disney World vacation Paperback – February 28, 2015
Author: Visit ‘s Roger Wilk Page ID: 1508597049

Paperback: 78 pagesPublisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (February 28, 2015)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1508597049ISBN-13: 978-1508597049 Product Dimensions: 5 x 0.2 x 8 inches Shipping Weight: 4.8 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #32,284 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #39 in Books > Travel > United States > South > South Atlantic

As I prepared for my first adventure in the online Land of Fast Pass + (NOT my first adventure to WDW), someone recommended this book to me. For a basic guide without a lot of frills, this is a good book. The author gets straight to the point and does not include an overwhelming amount of information. If you are new to the FP+ system, this is a good primer to use before you make that first click. If you are new to WDW, then I would suggest this author’s other books to you as well. Based on the content of "The Complete Guide to FastPass+ and My Disney Experience," you will find his books to have all the basic information you need to plan a vacation to WDW.

Planning a Disney vacation can be a complicated and sometimes overwhelming task. This book is a ‘must have’ for anyone hoping to make the most of their trip. The author explains how to make the most of the FPP system to help you save tons of time on your trip! The walk through of the My Disney Experience app is very helpful too! Roger takes you through the app step by step in simple, easy to understand language that explains all the features of the app. Get this book!

Loved this book! It was an easy and fast read…and for a Disney-loving new mom, that was awesome! My husband and I have been to Disney World combined so many times we’ve stopped counting…including on our Honeymoon where we were apart of the Magic Band Pilot phase. Even so…I still learned lots of great info by reading this book. It also confirmed a lot of stuff I always speculated, but wasn’t sure about. I’d highly recommend this book to veteran Disney go-ers as well as brand new, never been novices. It’s a great read…made me excited to go back to Disney again! Buy it and enjoy!!

Student Study Guide for Biology 8th Edition
Author: Visit ‘s Neil A. Campbell Page ID: 032150156X

Paperback: 544 pagesPublisher: Benjamin Cummings; 8th edition (December 22, 2007)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 032150156XISBN-13: 978-0321501561 Product Dimensions: 8.4 x 1.3 x 10.6 inches Shipping Weight: 2.8 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #140,498 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #82 in Books > History > Historical Study & Educational Resources > Historiography #337 in Books > Textbooks > Science & Mathematics > Biology & Life Sciences > Biology #656 in Books > Education & Teaching > Studying & Workbooks > Study Guides

I have bought a lot of student study guides in my life, and many of them have been nearly worthless. This one is not. The main textbook goes into so much detail that it is sometimes easy to lose sight of the main points of the chapters. This study guide does a wonderful job of bringing the key concepts into focus. The chapter summaries are clear and concise, covering all the main points of the chapters without going into too much detail (you can read the main text if you want detail). Latin word roots are explained (to help with memorization) in each chapter, and the in-chapter questions and post-chapter quizzes are fantastic, with answers and explanations to the questions provided at the back of the book.

This book helped me a lot in test preparation for my college course with its review questions. My professor still tested the class on even more details though. Therefore it will not guarantee you an "A" grade.

I would recommend this book to someone who does not have the time to read the textbook over and over again.

this book has been a big help in studying for exams! The regular text book is good, but so big it seems overwhelming at times.

My instructor actually used the book for study questions for our class—he highly recommends it as well.
